Hollywood's go-to event planner Mindy Weiss creates more than just parties; she brings her clients' lifestyle visions to life. "Given my passions and interests, the transition was natural but not always seamless—most transitions rarely are!" recalls the entrepreneur, who started her eponymous company, Mindy Weiss Party Consultants, more than 20 years ago. "It took some time, but I've found a balance between continuing my core work as an event planner while also pursuing other passions."
In addition to securing her name as a leading expert in the wedding industry, Weiss also worked on maintaining her jewelry line, writing best-selling wedding planning and baby books, as well as crafting emergency kits. In an effort to gain some #girlboss inspiration from one of Hollywood's most talked about planning gurus (some of her most prestigious clients include Ciara, Heidi Klum, and Sofia Vergara) we asked Weiss where she got her start—and how she brings her clients' ideas to life.
What was your first job, and how did it ultimately inspire you to become an entrepreneur?
My first job was at a stationery store. I was so inspired by the creativity and my love for paper (and all pretty things) that I ended up starting a stationery business called JAM with my best friend Janis, where we designed all sorts of invitations. From there, I got into party planning and my business grew from word of mouth until I secured my first celebrity client. The rest is history.
What's your job title and company mission?
I am the founder of Mindy Weiss Party Consultants ... but I like to call myself a Dream Catcher. We aim to create unforgettable experiences for our clients and bring their visions to life.
What is like to be a female running her own company?
Exhilarating, of course. Running your own business is a lot of pressure and a lot of time, but it's also so rewarding. I love how I'm able to impact my clients' lives and make their dreams come true. Being a woman running my own business is empowering. Plus, my kids think it's pretty cool.
How'd you decide to start this business?
I've always loved to be creative. I got to spread my wings a bit with JAM, and clients began asking me to plan their events. From there, I started getting more clients and expanded into the celebrity realm. Starting Mindy Weiss Party Consultants really allows me to be creative in a different way every day.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to start his or her own event-planning company?
Always keep your sense of humor. No matter how meticulous you are, there's always something that won't go as planned—learn to roll with it.
What's the best career advice you've ever received?
The best career advice I received is also great life advice: be patient, work hard, and good things will come.
What was an unexpected obstacle you faced while starting your own company?
Relinquishing control. When you start your own company you naturally need to be able to delegate certain duties to your team. I had a hard time with that at first, but once I came to my senses and realized how much I could trust my MWPC team of rock stars, it's no longer an issue.
You've had your fair share of elite celebrity clients. What are some of your favorite memories from a celebrity event?
It's impossible to pick and choose my favorite memories—there's something I loved about each and every celebrity wedding I've done. Aside from the privacy aspect (we have to watch out for paparazzi!), planning a celebrity event is actually not very different from planning any other wedding. The couple is so excited to be getting married and they want a special, memorable wedding day just like anyone else! Just like you, they've been dreaming about their wedding day for a long time and have a certain vision in mind. My job is to make their wedding dreams come true and make sure they feel like a bride or groom, rather than a celebrity.
If you could have lunch with any person who would it be, and what would you eat?
Oprah and Michelle Obama together! We'd eat tons of comfort food, family style, while we chat away.
